Stepping away from the daily grind and taking time for yourself (self-care), looks different for everyone; what works for one person, might not work for another. There have been an endless array of practices over the years associated with self-care.
Some including meditation and/or yoga, dietary cleansing, and physical exercise have proven health benefits, while other practices like liquid lunches (mid-day cocktailing) although popular in the late 1960s and 70s, weren’t as beneficial.
I think the biggest deterrent to ‘self-care’ for me was the time commitment, and the marketing/imagery surrounding the term didn’t help either. A typical yoga class lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to and hour or more, and as much as I tried to relax, it always felt like a waste of time. I tried meditation and deep breathing as well, but ended up feeling more anxious than when I started. I guess I kind of gave up on the idea of self-care.
Surprisingly, in recent years I have come to realize that I have been practicing meditation, in the form of prayer. I was so preoccupied with the marketing/imagery of self-care, that I lost sight of what caring for myself actually looked like. In as little as twenty minutes, I am able to tune out distractions and concentrate on what matters. Taking time each day to focus and pray for myself and others, not only calms me, it’s where I find peace from the life’s challenges.
Speaking of self-care, here are a few more adaptogens to consider. Keep in mind, it is recommended to start using one adaptogen at a time, to experience the benefits and/or determine dosage adjustments.
HOLY BASIL: Holy Basil, an antioxidant, is said to be good for metabolic health, improving blood sugar control, boosting immunity, reducing anxiety, depression, and poor sleep. It is also believed to promote a healthy mind, body, and spirit.
Dosage: Start with 500ml/2x day
Note: Although I haven’t tried Holy Basil yet, I am looking forward to sharing my experience with you in the upcoming weeks.
MACA: Dr. Sims mentions that ‘if you’re looking for an ‘all-around’ adaptogen to try, Maca is a good one. Maca is said to work as a hormone modulator; it has strong anti-inflammatory properties (regulates adrenal & thyroid function) and works as a ‘steroid’ hormone. Maca boosts mood and energy, alleviates brain fog, and decreases feelings of anxiety and depression.
Note: I have used Maca powder on occasion (in shakes), but have not supplemented regularly enough to notice any of its’ benefits. Maca powder has a nice ‘malty’ flavor and tastes great with both vanilla and chocolate flavors.
Dosage: Follow package directions as to dosage
