I started using adaptogens after reading Dr. Sims book, Next Level; a guide for women interested in improving their health and performance. Adaptogens can be consumed as supplements, teas, or powders added to food. No matter what stage of life you’re in, most of us experience symptoms associated with hormone imbalance including but not limited to: irregular periods, unexpected weight gain, hormone belly (bloating that is unrelated to diet or exercise), brain fog, insomnia, and muscle loss.
Adaptogens derived from herbs, roots, and mushrooms are believed to help the body manage stress, fatigue, and anxiety. They are intended to help the body adapt to and resist the chemical stress reaction. The health benefits associated with adaptogens include hormone balance, stress relief, exercise recovery, and immune function.
Here are a couple of adaptogens I have tried as well as Dr. Sims recommended dosage.
ASHWAGANDHA: Ashwagandha is said to have an over all calming effect. Dr. Sims mentions that most women start with this adaptogen.
Dosage: 300ml/2x day for menopausal symptoms, body composition benefits, and blood glucose control. It is recommended to take for at least 2 months.
Note: I tried the recommended dose for 1 month and noticed an improvement in my sleep pattern. I plan on trying it for 2 months to see if it helps with ‘hormone belly’.
RHODIOLA: Rhodiola is said to be a stimulant, so it’s best to take your dose in the am. Dr. Sims recommends trying this adaptogen first. It is said to combat fatigue and improve cognitive function. It also enhances exercise performance, decreases irritability and anxiety.
Dosage: 150-600ml/day
Note: Rhodiola lowers blood pressure, and is not recommended for those with low blood pressure. I noticed an immediate feeling of calm after starting on this adaptogen. My sleep improved substantially as well.
*Before using adaptogens, check with your healthcare provider. Adverse effects may occur when using with prescribed medications. Adaptogens are not recommended for pregnant women, or women who are nursing.
